About Freedom Shabbat

What is Freedom Shabbat?

Freedom Shabbat is a social justice movement that asks Jewish communities to remember modern-day slavery during their Passover celebrations. This remembrance can take many forms:  fundraising for a charity that helps recovered slaves, having children in the community learn more child slavery, sharing information about the forms of contemporary slavery, discussion of the scriptural basis for our obligation to end slavery, partnering with Not For Sale by using tools for smart activism, etc. We have a guide with several ideas, but whatever your community feels to be most germane is good too!

Why Freedom Shabbat?

Freedom Shabbat is an opportunity for Jews all over the world to come together at one time and voice their call for an end to slavery, and their desire for freedom worldwide so inherent to the Jewish heart. We were once ourselves slaves in Egypt and have never stopped longing for the freedom of the Jewish people, long after our escape, and we have an obligation as Jews and as humans to ensure the freedoms of all peoples in this world and decry the senseless enslavement of millions across the globe. The same undying love for freedom that has kept the Jewish people alive during the past millennia must now be spread throughout the world. The people of Israel are to act as a light unto the nations, as an example for all people to live by.  We are called to repair the world.Freedom Shabbat is an opportunity for Jews all over the world to come together at one time and voice their call for an end to slavery, and their desire for freedom worldwide so inherent to the Jewish heart. Join Us!

Join us for the third annual Freedom Shabbat, April 13, 2012.  In 2011 Jews from different cities, different states, and different nations all came together on this sacred day in solidarity with their fellow Jews and with their fellow human. In 2012 you have the chance to participate in something even bigger with the opportunity of affecting millions, freeing others from bondage as we once were, while celebrating the value of life. Every Shabbat is a great opportunity to celebrate freedom, but be sure to mark this one down as a “can’t miss date!”
